I've been busy painting these vivid night sky landscapes the entire month of January! It was a special project to kick off the New Year. Each one was unique exploration of a tiny, colorful world that reaches beyond the earthly landscape into the infinite universe surrounding our planet.

What I thought was going to be a quick project compared to my much larger works, turned out to engulf way more time than anticipated. It was a lovely, immersive time in the studio and I got some incredible results. But once I completed the set, emerged from the studio, I realized just how much time it took away from my other projects. And sadly, I decided that as much fun as switching up scale in this fashion was and it was a great challenge which is important to grow as an artist,  I am calling this the final chapter in my wood slice paintings. I hope that folks who love my art but either don't have the space for larger pieces or the budget for buying large art, that those people connect with these pieces.

Each wood slice painting begins with being sanded, primed multiple times and having its edges and back sealed with multiple coats of varnish. Then the dreaming up of a new composition and color palet begins to swirl in my mind. I do a rough sketch and start with the slow layering of translucent acrylic washes. For these small paintings, each one is built up with between 20-30 layers. Its gradual but with each layer, the patterns emerge and the vibrancy of colors becomes stronger. The stars are drawn with acrylic paint markers between layers to give more depth. Finally when the under painting feels balanced and complete, I add the detailed line work over the landscape. Then I repaint and outline the outer edge of the wood as it gets covered in pain in the process. Then I spray varnish a few coats of glass varnish, one by one, and then I brush on the final coats of mat varnish by hand, about 5. Then the certificate goes on the back and so does the hook.
